⌠Revival of Culture of the Volga Region ≈ House Wood Engraving■
House Wood Engraving is one of the most amazing Russian national crafts. It's too fragile and cannot exist without special care. That's why it became ineffective in modern building construction. And with the loss of interest to HWE, its unique examples are dissappering rapidly. We'd like to save this cultural heritage.
In 2001-2002 SFFR developed and relized the project "Revival of Culture of the Volga Region ≈ House Wood Engraving". It was aimed at reviving the HWE technique as part of russian cultural heritage. The project was supported by the Department of Culture of Samara Regional Administration.
The project posed several problems to be solved:
study, save and revive the examples of house wood engraving;
develop the catalogue of house wood engraving techniques and examples;
involve young people and teenagers in collecting and imitation of house wood engraving techniques;
train house wood engraving to teenagers;
develop examples which could be used for industrial use.
SFFR gathered skilled teachers and experienced specialist in HWE. All of them were interested in House Wood Engraving art and were eager to take part in the project. These people's experience and knowledge allowed to open a workshop on HWE art. The workshop was based in Municipal Educational Institution Youth Club "IRBIS".
40 teenagers from Samara industrial districts completed the first group of the workshop. Under the supervision of the workshop specialists they took part in the project. This worthy undertaking was a very important experience for these unhappy children. They were introduced to russian cultural heritage, mastered dissapearing craft and found themselves in positive creative working atmosphere. They collected examples of house wood engraving, studied and catalogued them. They were taught the techniques as well.
The House Wood Engraving techniques are being lost. So SFFR developed the House Wood Engraving catalogue and a textbook. The textbook is accessible for everyone at http://www.domrezba.narod.ru.
SFFR created an information network to include a number of nonprofit organizations from different regions of Russia. We welcome everyone to join the network.
SFFR held seminars on house wood engraving for handicraft teachers of schools and youth clubs.
